OVERVIEW
The Steel Safari is one of the best true field/practical long-range
rifle matches in the world. It's been going on since 1998 and we've
been running it since 2008. The Steel Safari is one of four core
matches of the Competition Dynamics season, and we continue to develop
new match concepts. The Steel Safari may be the longest running match
of its type. The Steel Safari has helped to shape the concept of what
field shooting means and helped to forge the strong tradition of
practical shooting that runs deep in the Rocky Mountain shooting
community. We believe that attending the Steel Safari often
transforms a shooter's view of what practical and field long-range
shooting is all about. The more top-level shooters we can get to this
match from around the world the better. We want the "best of the
best" to compete head to head annually at the Steel Safari.
GOALS
This year we are making some changes to the registration process for
the Steel Safari. The goals of the new registration scheme are:
- to raise the level of competition at the match by encouraging a "best of the best" showdown, and
- to get more talented shooters from around the world, who have never shot the Steel Safari, into the match.
- to provide transparency to the registration process so everyone knows how it works and understands the process
CHANGE TO FORMAT
This year we have also integrated the "Long Range Side Match" into the
main match. It is no longer "optional"; however, it will still be
scored separately and will have its own prize table. Its new name
will be the "Long-Range Known-Distance Exercise" LRKDE and it will
take place at the normal time on Friday. If you need to miss the
LRKDE on Friday, your main match score will not be affected; however,
in the event of a main match die, LRKDE score will be used as the
tiebreaker.
PRIZE TABLE
We also have a new Director of Sponsorships and Promotions, Jeff (aka
Mendocino on SnipersHide). At his first run being a sponsor director
at last year's Thunder Beast Team Challenge, he raised a prize table
worth over $35,000 in about three months. Under current management,
the Steel Safari has always had a pretty good prize table, but we're
going to do even better in 2012. We would like to use sponsorships
and promotions as a means to increase the value of these matches to
our sponsors and our competitors.
REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS
- The application will be posted during the night of Sunday January 1st 2012. We will accept applications through the end of Monday January 9th. This period is the "application submission window."
- There is no preference given based on when your application is received during the window.
- The application may be delivered using any carrier you wish, but it is ultimately your responsibility to get it in on time.
- We will have 40 competitor slots, which break down into the
following categories for the purpose of initial registration.
Applicants will be drawn at random from categories (2) and (3) to
grant initial match slots, using the specified criteria.
- Sponsor & Military slots (select military personnel if they become available at the last minute). These slots are awarded by the match director and sponsor/promotions director. Number: approx 6-8.
- Steel Safari Alumni slots. Approx 18 slots are reserved for applicants who have shot the Steel Safari since 2008. Some selection preference will be granted to those who have placed in the top-10 at the Steel Safari since 2008.
- New Competitor slots. Approx 15 slots are reserved for people who have never shot the Steel Safari before (going back to 2008). Some selection preference will be granted to those who have applied but not attended the match.
- When the application submission window ends, we will sort the applications into piles for categories (2) and (3) and randomly draw for each respective category, applying some selection preference as described.
- For an application to be considered, it must be complete and paid. Please send a personal check for payment.
- Once the match is full, a single wait list will be established with a merged order from categories (2) and (3). Once we get into the wait list, the proportions of groups (2) and (3) will not be maintained.
- If you do not get selected initially, you can either stay on the waiting list or withdraw. We will shred all checks that are not deposited (instead of returning them).
- Note: last year everyone who stayed on the waiting list until the match date got a chance to compete in the Steel Safari.
- Any entrant who sends a check that is subsequently returned because of insufficient funds (NSF) will be denied entrance to the match and his match fee will be forfeit, once recovered!
